Attended Grey College from Sub A to matric. Did basic military service at 1SSB in Tempe, Bloemfontein, and 1 Military Hospital, Pretoria.
Attended University of Cape Town and entered the teaching profession as a Science teacher. Taught in a number of schools in Cape Town, New Zealand and Sydney, Australia, where my family and I have resided since 1987. Very involved in school life in the areas of sport (cricket, soccer, shooting and hockey), as well as photography.
Was introduced to the sport of fencing by English teacher Joe Barry at Grey and did a bit of fencing at university, as well as some sailing.
Took up squash and tennis in my young teaching days and played socially for many years till health issues made this difficult. Also took up running and completed seven annual City-to-Surf races before retiring when the knees gave in.
Spend my leisure time travelling and photographing the world. I used to kayak or sail on Sydney Harbour, but older age has been catching up with me so I’m no more able to do it. Although retired, I still teach up to two days a week at North Sydney Boys, which I am proud to say is the top boy’s school in NSW and probably Australia.
Married to Sandra Bank, with whom I have two adult children, both of whom live in Sydney. We also have a wonderful grandson, to whom I am devoted besides photography.
