I went to the Air force in Pretoria, after which I obtained my B.Sc (Qs) degree at the University of the Free State. In 1976 I went to work for a construction company in Empangeni.

In 1999 I went deep-sea fishing on a ski-boat for about a year, after which I started a construction company in Empangeni with a friend.

In 2006 we closed shop and I returned to Bloemfontein. After a short stint helping a friend, I went to work for Murray and Roberts. In 2001, I got tired of the construction industry and took early retirement.

When I still worked for Murray and Roberts, I started an instant lawn farm which I still run. We also started a wedding venue which complemented the guest house which we started in 2002.

Diana and I got married in 1980. In 1982 we had a son, Fraser, and in 1984 a daughter, Robyn. In 1998 we had our third child, Richard. Both my sons went to Grey.  Sadly, Fraser got killed in a microlight accident when he was 21 years old.

Robyn became a medical doctor. She got lupus when in standard 9 and was in and out of hospital ever since. She got very sick in 2014 and passed away.  My youngest son, Richard, his wife, Madel, and my wife all work on the farm and venue.
